National Centre for Writing supports a new cohort of emerging literary translators through its prestigious mentoring programme<\/strong><\/p>\n

The mentees<\/strong> selected for the prestigious Emerging Translator Mentorships Programme 2024\/2025<\/strong> were announced<\/strong> by the National Centre for Writing (NCW)<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

The Emerging Translator Mentorships Programme is supported by Arts Council England<\/strong>, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award<\/strong>, the Italian Cultural Institute of London<\/strong>, the Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities<\/strong> at UCLA and Waseda University, the Literary Translation Institute of Korea<\/strong>, the Polish Cultural Institute<\/strong>, the National Arts Council Singapore<\/strong>, FarLit<\/strong>, Lithuanian Culture Institute<\/strong> and the Society of Authors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Every year the programme supports the development of a new cohort of literary translators into English, particularly for languages whose literature is currently under-represented in English translation. For the first time this year, the programme also offers an exciting new mentorship strand, open exclusively to applicants with a chronic illness.<\/p>\n

Now in its fourteenth year, the scheme was founded by writer, editor and translator Daniel Hahn and is organised by the NCW. It has so far supported 131 translators in more than 36 languages.<\/p>\n

Annie Rutherford<\/strong>, Emerging Translator Mentorships Programme Manager said:<\/p>\n

\u2018We are absolutely delighted to welcome our nine new mentees, all of whom really impressed us in their applications with their drive and their passion. These talented emerging literary translators will be working closely with their mentors over a six-month period to develop the skills and know-how they need to make it as literary translators. It’s particularly wonderful to have a couple of former mentees now returning as seasoned translators and mentors themselves, ready to support new emerging talent. As a first this year, we’re also pleased to be offering a mentorship for an emerging translator working from Faroese into English.\u2019<\/p>\n

\n\u2022 Fiona Spencer-Piacentini<\/a> \u2013 Italian to English, mentored by Elena Pala<\/strong>
\n\u2022 Ecre Karadag \u2013 Japanese to English, mentored by Polly Barton
\n\u2022 Sarah K. H. Yoo \u2013 Korean to English, mentored by Clare Richards
\n\u2022 Asher Maria \u2013 Lithuanian to English, mentored by Kotryna Garanasvili
\n\u2022 Monika Zaleska \u2013 Polish to English, mentored by Sean Gasper Bye
\n\u2022 Jilly Bong \u2013 Chinese to English, mentored by Jeremy Tiang
\n\u2022 Kasia Laganowska \u2013 Polish to English (mentorship for a chronically ill translator), mentored by Annie Rutherford<\/p>\n

Each mentee will be matched up with an experienced translator for a six-month period during which they work together on practical translation projects, developing their craft through working on a chosen text or texts.<\/p>\n
