The Luisa Selis Fellowship

The Luisa Selis Fellowship

We are delighted to announce that Sonita Sarker has been awarded the first Luisa Selis Fellowship.

On Thursday 8, Katia Pizzi (Centre for the Study of Cultural Memory) and Francesco Carta (Fondazione Sardegna) will present the project at the Italian Cultural Institute.

Funded by the Fondazione di Sardegna in memory of anthropologist Luisa Selis, who specialised in the cultural memory of Sardinia, this new Fellowship enables researchers in this field (ethnography, anthropology and/or literature for example) to conduct research at the Centre for the Study of Cultural Memory at the Institute of Modern Languages Research and the Italian Cultural Institute.

Sonita Sarker, Professor in the Departments of English and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Macalester College, Minnesota, will be taking up her Fellowship in May 2017 and, during her stay in London, will be pursuing her research into two Sardinians who became world figures: the writer Grazia Deledda (1871-1936), who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926, and Antonio Gramsci, political theorist and sociologist (1891-1937).

Next year the Italian Cultural Institute and the Italian departments of UK universities will commemorate the 80th anniversary of Antonio Gramsci’s death.
