Elena Cattaneo Stories of science, cells and freedom

Department of Biosciences, Centre for Stem Cell Research Università degli Studi di Milano, Milan, Italy And Italian Senator for life

Elena Cattaneo is Full Professor of pharmacology at the University of Milan. Prof. Cattaneo studies the biology of Huntington disease, a devastating neurological condition. In recognition of her contributions to science she has been appointed as Senator for Life in 2013. The presentation will illustrate some of the domains of stem cell research and will reflect on their potential in understanding human diseases and developing new treatments. The starting point will be the stories of everyday science to recall how an experiment is brought to life and a result is obtained. We will discuss the role of science in our societies and how to make sure that scientific research does not fall victim to political maneuvers. All this will be part of a pathway dominated by the awareness of the vitality and= responsibility science brings together when exploring the unknown on behalf of our society and its citizens.
