Remembering Pio La Torre in the 90th anniversary of his birth

With the partecipation of Franco La Torre and Federico Varese

Pio La Torre was a leader of the Italian Communist Party and the only Member of Parliament killed by the mafia while he was in office on the 30th April 1982. La Torre was elected in the Italian Chamber of Deputies for the district of Palermo in 1972. He became a member of the Antimafia Commission, formed in 1962, which published its final report in 1976. La Torre, together with judge Cesare Terranova among others, wrote a minority report, which pointed to links between the Mafia and prominent politicians.

In his political activity he initiated a law that introduced a new crime in the Italian legal system, mafia conspiracy, and the possibility for the courts to seize and to confiscate the assets of the persons belonging to the mafia conspiracy. Pio La Torre was awarded the Golden Civilian Service Award of the Italian Republic.

This event is held on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Pio La Torre’s birth.

Franco La Torre is Pio La Torre’s son. He is expert in international cooperation and author of Sulle ginocchia. Pio La Torre, una storia (2015) and Pio La Torre. Ecco chi sei (2017, with Filippo La Torre and Riccardo Ferrigato).

Federico Varese is a Professor of Criminology at the University of Oxford and a Senior Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford. He is the author, among other publications, of Mafias on the Move (PUP, 2011). He contributes to The Times Literary Supplement and, in Italy, the daily La Stampa. His work has been featured in The Economist, The BBC News & World Service, ABC, The Guardian, The New York Times, The Monkeycage Blog and Freakonomics blog, among others. His new book, Mafia Life (June 2017) is being translated into seven languages and has been optioned for TV.
