Curated and moderated by Monica Capuani, “Contemporary” is a series of encounters – conversations, readings and live performances – presenting to the British audience an authoritative overview of Italian contemporary theatre.

Italian actors, playwrights and directors, both acclaimed masters and successful new voices, talk about their artistic research and discuss with important figures of British contemporary theatre.

After Fabrizio Gifuni, Pippo Delbono, Iaia Forte with Branka Katic, Lucia Calamaro with Haydn Gwynne, Ann Goldstein with Melly Still and Monica Dolan, guests of the sixth encounter will be Lella Costa, Omar Elerian and Nassim Soleimanpour.


Lella Costa is an actress, writer and dubber. She graduated at the Accademia dei Filodrammatici in Milan and made her debut in 1980 with her first monologue, genre for which she became particularly famous. She also worked for the cinema (since 1989 with Ladri di saponette directed by Maurizio Nichetti) and TV (by participating to shows such as La TV delle ragazze), along with a civic stance in particular for Emergency. She performed and produced theatre plays in collaboration with musicians, directors and authors such as Ivano Fossati, Marco Baliani, Alessandro Baricco, Gabriele Vacis, Serena Dandini and Stefano Bollani.

Omar Elerian
is a director, dramaturge, and performer. He studied physical theatre at Lecoq's school in Paris. His work includes Jericho House’s The Tempest, which premiered in Palestine and Israel before coming to the Barbican, London; You’re Not Like The Other Girls Chrissy, nominated for an Olivier and winner of The Stage’s Best Solo Performance; Les P’tites Grandes Choses at the Maison de Arts du Cirque et du Clown, France. He is currently Associate Director at the Bush Theatre in London.

Nassim Soleimanpour
was born in 1981 in Tehran. His 2010 play White Rabbit Red Rabbit, first performed at the 2010 in Edinburgh, has since been performed widely and in several languages. In 2016, it was a big hit at the Westside Theatre, in New York City, performed among other by F. Murray Abraham, Alan Cumming, Cinthya Nixon, Whoopy Goldberg, Nathan Lane. In Italy, It was performed by Lella Costa in Milan. It is to be performed each night by a different actor, who has not seen the script before. Nassim is currently developing his new play at the Bush Theatre in London.

Monica Capuani
is a freelance cultural journalist for important Italian magazines such as L’Espresso, L’Europeo, io Donna, Elle. She is also a literary translator from English and French, having translated more than seventy novels, and of English and American Drama, bringing several plays to the Italian stage, most recently The Pride by Alexi Kaye Campbell, directed and interpreted by Luca Zingaretti.
