The winners of the Mario Merz Prize - Second Edition

The winners of the second edition of the Mario Merz Prize will be announced at the prestigious venue of the Italian Cultural Institute in London; the winners will be chosen from Gabriele Cosmi, Geoffrey Gordon, Pierre Mariétan and Catherine Milliken for music and Francesco Arena, Petrit Halilaj, Gili Lavy, Shahryar Nashat and Suha Traboulsi for art.

The juries – comprising the audience and Dieter Ammann (composer), Thomas Demenga (cellist and composer), Alexander Lonquich (pianist) and Willy Merz for the music section, and by Manuel Borja-Villel (Director of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid), Lawrence Weiner (artist), Massimiliano Gioni (Artistic Director of the New Museum, New York - Artistic Director of the Trussardi Foundation, Milan) and Beatrice Merz for the art section – will choose the winners.

Beatrice and Willy Merz will be announcing them.

Federico Bianchi (First Secretary, Chief of Press and Cultural Affairs, Embassy of Italy in London) and Marco Delogu (Director of the Italian Cultural Institute) will be adding their greetings.

For the occasion, a special sound work will be presented: “I am Dr. Merz. A Voice Opera on Mario Merz Texts”, a sort of “multi-voice portrait” to describe the artist in an unusual way using his own words and lyrics. The piece will offer a blend of electronic music tracks, analogue sounds and voice recordings offered to the project by the generous participation of artists, writers and ordinary people, chosen on the basis of their proximity or sharing of the themes tackled by Mario Merz during the course of his art and life.


Held every two years, the Mario Merz Prize, was established with the intent of identifying and bringing to the public eye personalities in the field of art, through the expertise of a large international network of experts, while at the same time enabling young composers to propose themselves for an innovative contemporary music project.

The Mario Merz Prize, promoted by the Fondazione Merz with the collaboration of an organising committee and supported by an authoritative international committee of honour, has been awarded the Medal of the President of the Italian Republic. The prize enjoys has the patronage of the Embassy of Switzerland in Italy, the Embassy of Italy in Switzerland, the Piedmont Region, the City of Zurich and the City of Turin.
