The Pace of History, the Shape of Democracy: #2 Il Divo

The Pace of History, the Shape of Democracy: #2 Il Divo

The autumn at the Italian Cultural Institute is dedicated to contemporary history: twelve talks on "The Pace of History, the Shape of Democracy", from 21 September, organised by professor Andrea Mammone (Royal Holloway) and Professor Umberto Gentiloni (la Sapienza, Rome). In a fast-moving world, these talks analyse the current state of western democracies, including the changing faces of politics, the relationships between citizens and institutions, the impact of new media, the rising inequalities, and how society and culture react to these challenges.

After the great success of the opening lecture about Fascism and Populism, on Thursday 21 September; the series continues with the screening of "Il Divo", by Paolo Sorrentino. Academy-Award winner, the movie is the cinematic portrait of seven-time Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, tried and acquitted for Mafia ties.

The screening will be followed by an open discussion and Q&A about Italian political parties and the end of the "First Republic", moderated by Professor Andrea Mammone (Royal Holloway University London)

Four more talks on Antonio Gramsci and his enduring legacy, 80 years after his death, will take place starting on 26 October, on the occasion of the exhibition of his Prison Notebooks, for the first time travelling outside of Italy. Organised by the Fondazione Gramsci with the Institute.

Two seminars by ASMI, the Association for the Study of Modern Italy, on Studying Italy from Abroad, on 29 September, and The Culture and Politics of the Italian Family, on 1 and 2 December.

Distinguished historians, Italian and International, every week at the Institute.
