When the immune system can't recognise us anymore. Seminar 1

When the immune system can't recognise us anymore. Seminar 1

With Dr Elisa Astorri (Barts Hospital, Queen Mary University)

What is autoimmunity, what causes it and the most important symptoms not to be missed.

Our immune system protects us from the outside world. Our white blood cells fight viruses, bacteria and can recognise the intruders. Sometimes, however, a minor event like flu, a viral infection, can make our immune system go "crazy". Our white cells, instead of fighting viruses and bacteria, attack our own body. This is when autoimmune diseases can be triggered. Why can our white cells start behaving in the wrong way and what are the consequences?

More and more often, doctors are diagnosing these conditions. Is this because they are more frequent or because we are looking better? What are the most common autoimmune conditions, who are the subjects mostly at risk? What goes wrong in the immune system and what triggers the onset of autoimmune diseases?

We will discuss all the above questions and address the early symptoms of the most common autoimmune diseases.
