Memoirs and Interviews: Joseph Rykwert and Alain Elkann

A master of the art of the interview and one of the most influential architecture historians and critics meet on the occasion of the publication of their most recent books – Alain Elkann’s Interviews and Joseph Rykwert’s Remembering Places respectively – and talk about memoirs and how their life’s experiences shaped their working life.


Joseph Rykwert is Paul Philippe Cret Professor Emeritus of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, and one of the foremost architectural historians and critics of his generation. He has spent most of his working life in the UK and US and in 2014 he has been awarded the RIBA’s highest honour, the Royal Gold Medal. Rykwert is the author of many influential works on architecture, including The Idea of a Town (1963), On Adam’s House in Paradise (1972), The Dancing Column (1996) and The Seduction of Place (2000). All his books have been translated into several languages.

Alain Elkann has written several books of short stories, nonfiction and interviews with, among others, Chief Rabbi of Rome Elio Toaff, Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan, the Italian writer Alberto Moravia, and the artist Michelangelo Pistoletto. He has been a counselor to the Italian cultural ministry, and the Chairman of the Egyptian museum in Turin. Awarded the Legion d’Honneur by the French Republic, Elkann presently serves as President of the Foundation for Italian Art and Culture in New York and is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is on the board of the Italian Academy of Columbia University.
