Vinca il peggiore. La più bella partita di basket della mia vita

Vinca il peggiore. La più bella partita di basket della mia vita

London, Spring 2015. An amateur Italian basketball coach has succeeded in bringing a team of teenagers, including his son, to the junior final, where they will come up against a stronger, unbeatable team. Waiting to take the field, the coach recalls a match seen on TV, at a bar counter in New York thirty years before. That match made history: Georgetown-Villanova, final of the NCAA (the American college championship). A challenge between the magnificent defending champions, already destined to be the next NBA pros, and a bunch of unlikely challengers with no hope to win. Everybody is convinced, the result is already known.

In his lastest novel, presented on this occasion at the Italian Cultural Institute, Enrico Franceschini weaves together an everyday story and a great sport endeavour, set at the time when basketball didn’t have the 24 second rule nor the three-point line.

Enrico Franceschini is the London correspondent of the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, for which he previously worked in New York, Washington, Moscow and Jerusalem. For his coverage of post- Soviet Russia he won the Europe Prize for Journalism in 1994. He is the author of a dozen books of fiction and non-fiction, including Voglio l’America (2009), Londra Babilonia (2011) and Scoop (2017).

This event is staged on the occasion of the XVII edition of the Settimana della lingua italiana nel mondo (16-22 ottobre 2017). Under the high patronage of the President of the Italian Republic.
