Curated and moderated by Monica Capuani, "Contemporary" is a series of encounters – conversations, readings and live performances – presenting to the British audience an authoritative overview of Italian contemporary theatre.

Italian actors, playwrights and directors, both acclaimed masters and successful new voices, talk about their artistic research and discuss with important figures of British contemporary theatre.

The tenth encounter of the series will take place at the Coronet Theatre in Notting Hill, within the framework of the Coronet International Festival.

After the premiere on the 25th, director Antonio Latella and actress Candida Nieri will be in conversation with Monica Capuani about their theatrical researches.


Antonio Latella was born in Castellamare di Stabia (Naples) in 1967. He attended acting school at the Stabile di Torino directed by Franco Passatore and at La Bottega Teatrale in Florence directed by Vittorio Gassman. Between 1986 and 1997 he starts his career as an actor working with directors such as Ronconi, Castri, Patroni Griffi, De Capitani. In 1998 he makes his debut as a director and in 2001 is awarded the Ubu prize for the project Shakespeare e oltre. The year 2005 sees the debut of La cena de le ceneri by Giordano Bruno (ANCT Award), in 2006 he is called to direct one of the workshops at the École des Maîtres, in 2007 Studio su Medea wins the Ubu Award for best show of the year. By 2011 he is the founder of stabilemobile compagnia Antonio Latella, through which he has conducted shows such as: Francamente me ne infischio (winner of the Ubu Award for Best Direction, 2013) and Die Wohlgesinnten (2013). His shows have been hosted in some of the most prestigious international theatres and festivals, such as Piccolo Teatro in Milan, Teatro Argentina in Rome, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Carignano in Turin, Volksbühne Berlin, Berliner Festspiele, Schauspielhaus Köln, Schauspielhaus Wien, Odéon Théâtre de l’Europe Paris, Comédie de Reims, Centro Cultural de Belém (Lisbon), Meyerhold Center in Moscow.

Candida Nieri won the Premio Ubu 2013 as best acttress for her role in Francamente me ne infischio, and collaborated with Antonio Latella in other plays such as Ti regalo la mia morte, Veronika.

Monica Capuani is a freelance cultural journalist for important Italian magazines such as L’Espresso, L’Europeo, io Donna, Elle. She is also a literary translator from English and French, having translated more than seventy novels, and of English and American Drama, bringing several plays to the Italian stage, most recently The Pride by Alexi Kaye Campbell, directed and interpreted by Luca Zingaretti.
