Italian Graphic Design 2. Typefaces. Dressing Literature: Psychology and Typeface Design

Italian Graphic Design 2. Typefaces. Dressing Literature: Psychology and Typeface Design

With Enrico Tallone and Keith Adams

How did type design evolve throughout the centuries, between innovations and great classics? Is it possible to make type design today without knowing its history? Enrico Tallone and Keith Adams will discuss their personal history of typography – thus comparing the experiences of the great Italian masters and their British counterparts – by making use of a poem by Jean-Pierre Rosnay, which was printed with original typefaces engraved from XVII to XX century. Among the used typefaces, the originals of the British masterpieces Caslon and Baskerville.

During the talk, the first edition of the Manuale tipografico by Giambattista Bodoni (1818) will be shown, as well as a new collection of 130 poems by Emily Dickinson, curated by Barbara Lanati and handset in Tallone typeface.

“Italian Graphic Design” is a series of six encounters about graphic design and visual communication in Italy in the XXth century. Six chapters of a possible history of Italian graphic design, conceived in order to understand the role of graphic designers in giving shape and identity to Italy’s social, economic and cultural landscape.

Full programme is available on the poster of the series, designed by Leonardo Sonnoli.
