Toscanini and La Scala

A talk by Alexander Pereira – Sovrintendente and Direttore Artistico del Teatro alla Scala.

Dr Pereira will be welcomed by HE the Italian Ambassador Pasquale Terracciano and will be introduced by Dr Gaia Servadio

To celebrate the one-hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary of Arturo Toscanini’s birth, the Italian Cultural Institute in London is pleased to feature an event in which Alexander Pereira – Sovrintendente and Direttore Artistico del Teatro alla Scala - will speak about this Italian conductor whose fame is still sound and bright all over the world.

After being introduced by writer and music expert Gaia Servadio, Pereira talk about some episodes of Toscanini’s extraordinary life and examine not only his unique performative qualities, but also the outstanding heritage he left as a musician and as a man.


Alexander Pereira was born in Vienna in 1947.
He worked initially in tourism management and then for Olivetti for twelve years. In his free time, he studied vocal performance.
From 1979 to 1983, he was a board member for the Frankfurt Bach Concerts.
In 1984 he was appointed Secretary General of the Vienna Konzerthaus, where he managed to modernise the concert scene and to attract a new and younger audience.
From the 1991/92 season till 2012, Alexander Pereira was Director of Zurich Opera House.
Here he attached great importance to encouraging promising young singers, staging productions in accessible form and involving audiences, as well as to co-operating with great artists.
The central goal of Alexander Pereira’s Zurich programming was to present the great repertoire of opera, from Mozart to Verdi, although the house has also won acclaim for its contemporary productions.
Since the autumn of 1996, he also held the post of Artistic Director and was a member of the Artistic Committee of the Zurich Festival, in whose creation he played a leading role.
From October 2011 till August 2014 Alexander Pereira was Artistic Director of the Salzburg Festival.
Alexander Pereira has been CEO and Artistic Director of Teatro alla Scala since September 1, 2014.

Gaia Servadio is an London-based Italian novelist, essayist and broadcaster.
She has written for Il Mondo, La Stampa, il Corriere della Sera, The Times, The Sunday Times, the Observer and the Telegraph Group.
She also worked for radio and television both in the UK (BBC radio, Channel 4, BBCTV2 and 4) and in Italy (RAI).
She has written on international politics and was a war correspondent.
She also has had exhibitions of her paintings in Rome and Milan, some of which were sent to group exhibitions from Australia to France.
She has lectured on a variety of subjects all over the world.
She has written several novels, including "Tanto gentile e tanto onesta" (1967), "Don Giovanni. L'azione consiste" (1968), "Un'infanzia diversa" (1988), "La storia di R." (1990), "E i morti non sanno" (2005) e "Raccogliamo le vele - Autobiografia" (2014).
She has published some historical essays on various subjects, such as "Luchino Visconti" (1980), "La Donna del Rinascimento" (1986), "Traviata. Vita di Giuseppina Strepponi" (1994), "Mozia. Alla scoperta di una civiltà scomparsa" (2003) and "Gioachino Rossini. Una vita" (2015),
