Contemporary #16: Peter Schneider and Maria Cassi

Contemporary #16: Peter Schneider and Maria Cassi

Introduced and moderated by Monica Capuani

Curated and moderated by Monica Capuani, “Contemporary” is a series of encounters – conversations, readings and live performances – presenting to the British audience an authoritative overview of Italian contemporary theatre.
Italian actors, playwrights and directors, both acclaimed masters and successful new voices, talk about their artistic research and discuss with important figures of British contemporary theatre.

The Circolo del Sale in Florence, founded by actress-playwright-clown Maria Cassi and chef Fabio Picchi, is an international crossroads of theatre and food. Peter Schneider, a key-figure of Disney’s relaunch thanks to Who Framed Roger Rabbit, saw her on the scene and immediately decided to conceive a one-woman-show for her in the United States. Maria Cassi and Peter Schneider will talk about this encounter and their individual artistic careers. Maria Cassi will read excerpts from My Life with Men... And Other Animals.

Peter Schneider is the recipient of a Best Musical Tony Award for producing The Lion King on Broadway, and has directed productions of My Life with Men...and Other Animals, starring Maria Cassi, (New York, Italy, Romania), Pal Joey (Pasadena, Little Rock), Sister Act, The Musical (World Premier Pasadena, Atlanta, London) and Julius Caesar (Romania). Schneider produced the award-winning 2009 documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty about Disney Animation from 1984 – 1994. During a seventeen-year tenure at the Walt Disney Company, he spearheaded the creation of over fifty films including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast (Golden Globe Award), The Little Mermaid, Toy Story and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Maria Cassi studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and the “Alessandra Galante Garrone” theatre school in Bologna. She is actress, playwright and director of her shows, which have been staged in several countries. In 2003 she co-founded with chef Fabio Picchi the Circolo Teatro del Sale in Florence, of which she is the president and artistic director. In 2007 she wrote and performed in La porta aperta [The Open Door], inspired by Peter Brook, and Crepapelle, which was staged in 2009 at the Théâtre du Rond Point in Paris. “Le Monde” compared her with Jacques Tati, Jerry Lewis and Charlie Chaplin. In 2008 she met Peter Schneider and brought Crepapelle at the Carrie Hamilton Theatre–Pasadena Playhouse in Los Angeles. In January 2010 she co-wrote with Patrick Pacheco My Life with Men... and Other Animals, directed by Peter Schneider. The show had its debut at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto and was staged Off-Broadway at the 45th Street Theater in New York in March 2012. From 2013 to 2018 she wrote, produced and performed in Attente al lupo, Schegge. Era una notte buia e tempestosa, Mammamia.
