The Great Tradition of Italian Cavalry – a Talk by Olympic Gold Medallist Mauro Checcoli and Andrea Atzeni

Different horse-riding techniques have always been developing in Italy. The classic technique started at the end of the 15th century in Naples and Ferrara with great Masters such as Pignatelli and Fieschi and their acolytes coming from all over Europe – some of them becoming very famous, like Antoine de Pluvinel in France and William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle , in England.

Until, at the end of the 19th century, Federigo Caprilli, Cavalry Officer in Pinerolo (Piedmont) revolutionized the jumping seat technique. He started examining horses free jumping and experimenting on himself and his own horses, eventually forming the “forward-seat” , the modern day system used by all jumping riders in the world today. The Foreign Press and the FEI recently proclaimed Caprilli the greatest horserider of the modern era.

This talk by Mauro Checcoli, twice Olympic Gold in Tokyo ’64 and one of the gratest riders of the last Century, will focus on the history of Italian Cavalry: with Andrea Atzeni, popular Italian jockey, they will analyse the evolution of horseracing.
