Peggy Guggenheim: from London to Venice - A documentary

Peggy Guggenheim (1898–1979) was undoubtedly one of the most iconic figures of the 20th century art world. In January 1938, with Marcel Duchamp as her mentor, Peggy opened her first gallery in London, Guggenheim Jeune, where she exhibited some of the most avant-garde artists of the time, including Jean Arp, Lucian Freud, Alexander Calder, Salvador Dalì, Pablo Picasso, and Yves Tanguy. Peggy Guggenheim and London at Ordovas explores this period in London, showcasing Peggy’s parallel collecting interests in Abstraction and Surrealism through a display of works by Jean Arp and Yves Tanguy.

In 1949, having honed the skills and artistic knowledge required to become a venerated collector, Guggenheim settled in Venice, where she would eventually spend the rest of her life. After exhibiting at the Venice Biennale in 1948, she acquired the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Gran Canal, where she displayed her magnificent collection, giving Italy one of its greatest artistic treasures.

This event celebrates Peggy Guggenheim as a pioneering figure of artistic and cultural exchange between the United Kingdom and Italy with a film screening at our Institute, to accompany the exhibition Peggy Guggenheim and London (at Ordovas Gallery until 14 December 2019).
