Fascism and Empire.
Ian Campbell and HRH Prince Asfa-Wossen Asserate in conversation with John Foot
Introduced by Katia Pizzi

A series of talks organised by ICI London and ASMI

It was the world’s first fascist movement and would have a lasting and ongoing impact in political and social life in many regions of the world. To discuss its meaning and consequences, the Italian Cultural Institute will host a series of conversations and discussions looking at new research and contemporary interpretations of Italian fascism. Themes to be discussed include violence, antifascism, Mussolini as a model for other strongmen, the fascist empire, Mussolini and his image, the March on Rome, Italian history and violence and the biographies of leading fascists and antifascists.

Ian Campbell is an independent scholar and international consultant. His career as a historian has focused on Ethiopia. In recent years his focus has been on the Italian military occupation of Ethiopia (1936-41). Tracking down survivors of the occupation over more than two decades culminated in a trilogy on Italian-occupied Ethiopia. The first of the trilogy was The Plot to Kill Graziani (Addis Ababa University Press, 2010), nominated in 2011 as Ethiopia’s Book of the Year. The second was The Massacre of Debre Libanos (AAU Press, 2014), which inspired the docu-film Debre Libanos by the Catholic Church television channel tv2000. Rounding off the trilogy is The Addis Ababa Massacre (Hurst, London & OUP, New York, 2017), a Financial Times Best History Book of the Year, also available in Italian translation (Rizzoli, Milan, 2017).

His latest book is Holy War, out in 2021 with C.Hurst & Co. Publishers, about Fascist Italy invasion of Ethiopia in 1935 and the chain of events that culminated in the Second World War. Ian Campbell brings a whole new perspective to the story, thanks to three decades of research on the subject.
