Performing Italy – Series 2

From Wednesday 4 May

Seven short video projects by theatre-makers of migrant heritage on contemporary Italian stages
Curated by Margherita Laera, University of Kent
In collaboration with Alberto Lasso, Carla Peirolero and Oliviero Ponte di Pino

Films by Nicola Giordanella | English subtitles by Corina Gabualdi | Production by Suq Genova Festival e Teatro

Performing Italy is back! ICI London has commissioned a second series of 15-minute video portraits of Italian theatre-makers of migrant and Global Majority heritage after a successful launch of the first series in 2021, which was broadcast on RAI 5 as part of the Next Generation Theatre Marathon, dedicated to Italy’s new generations of stage.

In each video-portrait, artists discuss their ideas about theatre, their journeys towards becoming theatre-makers and their recent and future stage projects, with the aim of addressing the effects of immigration on Italian theatre and society. Often born and/or raised in Italy to migrant parents or mixed families, the artists selected by Performing Italy are representatives of a generation that embodies the cultural intersections through which Italian identity is being rewritten and expanded. There is still little awareness of their voices as powerful carriers of change, despite the fact that Italy is the second country in Europe by number of resident foreigners (5.3 million as of January 1, 2019, of which 3.7 million non-European countries, source Eurostat). The seven protagonists of Performing Italy offer the opportunity to closely examine a changing Italy and to investigate the theme of Italianness in the 21st century.

Produced by Suq Festival and Theatre, an organisation based in Genoa which has been exploring and disseminating the values of inclusion and multiculturalism for over twenty years. #AspettandoilSuqFestival2022
