FILL – Festival of Italian Literature in London 2023

Saturday 22 April, from 10.30am
FILL – Festival of Italian Literature in London is back at the Coronet Theatre, Notting Hill
Supported by ICI London

Aptly titled ‘Safe words’, the new edition of FILL is faithful to its vocation as an observatory of the big issues of our time, but there are changes as well. To celebrate the rebirth from a period of suspension, the festival will take place in the springtime and the programme has been compressed to a single day full of events, opening with a workshop and closing with a DJ set.
The festival will cover some of the signature themes – literature and politics, migration, feminism, environmental humanities, sport as a cultural phenomenon – but will also offer a creative writing workshop with the renowned Italian writer Rossana Campo and an original tribute to the poet Patrizia Cavalli.

Each event is titled using a ‘safe word’: the words chosen resonate with us all in different ways and can have different meanings in different contexts or can be ambivalent, bearing both a positive and a negative meaning according to personal experiences.
Speakers and guests include writer David Winner in conversation with journalist Emanuele Atturo, Strega Prize winner Paolo Giordano with British Glodsmith prize winner Luke Williams, Albanian scholar Lea Ypi and compatriot artist Ornela Vorpsi, British-Italian Thea Lenarduzzi and British-Portuguese Yara Rodrigues Fowler, writers Andrea Tarabbia and Fabio Bacà, thinker Marco Belpoliti and author Philip Hoare, poet Maria Grazia Calandrone and Hannah Lowe, scholar Alberica Bazzoni and actor Amelia Donkor.

In collaboration with SIAL – Scuola italiana a Londra and ICI London, FILL 2023 also includes an Extra-FILL event on 24th April dedicated to primary school children, which will take place at SIAL in Holland Park. The workshop Draw a Story by Gianni Rodari will start with reading two stories from Il libro dei perché by Rodari, led by childrens’ books illustrator Giuditta Gaviraghi a.k.a. Judi Abbott.
Guided by Abbott’s expertise, the children will have the chance to illustrate the cover of their chosen story and bring it home with them.
Aimed at children aged 4-11, free admission, registration required, please book HERE

FILL was born in 2017 on the grassroots initiative of a group of Italians living in London, and has evolved into a project with a strong focus on intercultural debate.
In the last two years, FILL has also branched into cultural productions by creating a narrative podcast “The Fifth Siren”, about Venice as a metaphor of the contemporary world; and a podcast series “The Italian Files”, which brings to an English speaking audience less known aspects of Italian culture and history, both initiatives supported and hosted by ICI London Partner and support.
The festival is supported by the Italian Institute of Culture in London, Banor Capital and the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
We are also grateful to Il Circolo, EcoFleet, SIAL – La scuola italiana a Londra, Inspire the Mind and King’s College London, SIS – The Society for Italian Studies Be Advisor and the European Bookshop for their support.
