Johann Martin Von Rohden and his Nazarene Circle

Book presentation:

Johann Martin Von Rohden and his Nazarene Circle
Watercolours, Portraits, Preparatory Drawings

With the author Prof. Giovanna Capitelli

Rome takes centre stage at the Italian Cultural Institute once again: after the successful Rome Commission exhibition (still open to the public), the Institute hosts a talk by Professor Giovanna Capitelli on the catalogue she has written to accompany the exhibition of works by the artists belonging to the Nazarene School, Rome, in the first decades of the 19th Century, currently at the Galleria Carlo Virgilio in Rome.

On the occasion of the London Art Week, the Galleria Carlo Virgilio is exhibiting a selection of drawings from the group show, at the Harris Lindsay Gallery in Jermyn Street. The works constitute a vivid, rare and exceptional testimony of the amicable relationship and the practice of exchanging drawings among a group of skilled artists active in cosmopolitan Rome in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. It includes thirty-one drawings, for the most part carried out between 1806 and 1826, originating from the studio of Johann Martin von Rohden (1778-1830), the well-known German landscape painter who lived for many years in the Eternal City.
