On 24th August a great earthquake shook a wide mountainous area situated between the Umbria, Marche, Lazio and Abruzzo regions. The earthquake killed hundreds of people and devastated one of historically and artistically rich Italian areas: the medieval villages, the painted churches and the historical palaces today are reduced as a heap of rubbles.

In the places already affected by earthquake, two more seismic events on the 26th and the 30th October made the situation worse. In particular in Valnerina, in the district of Norcia and Preci, churches, cathedrals and monasteries already heavily damaged, are now completely flattened.

A first mapping of some of this places made on the first days after the earthquake of 24th august, has been followed by a comparative one in November, after the other two quakes.

This project has been commissioned by FOTOGRAFIA – International Festival of Rome, supported by Poste Italiane and Il Circolo as a part of a large fund-raising project in support of the restoration of the cultural treasures affected by the earthquake.

Flavio Scollo (Turin, 1984) - Photographer and curator, he is currently based in Rome. His research is focused on the study of the anthropological contemporary by analysing the historical and prehistoric and using methods inspired by, or mutuate, from archaeological practice.
