Naples '44 by Francesco Patierno, narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch

A documentary by Francesco Patierno
Narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch
Adapted from the memoir by Norman Lewis

Introduced by Michael Palin

After many years of working to bring the book to the screen, Naples '44 has finally been made by the director Francesco Patierno and narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch. The film recently won the 'Italian Film Critics' award for Best Documentary 2017.

Join us at the Royal Geographical Society, London for the first UK screening of the film on 2nd May 2017. It will be introduced by Michael Palin, with a panel of guests who worked with Norman Lewis including; award winning photo journalist Don McCullin, Director of BBC Content, Charlotte Moore, Lewis's biographer, Julian Evans and John Hatt.

Considered to be one of the greatest war memoirs of World War II, Norman Lewis's diaries describe in vivid and darkly humorous prose a war torn city, desolate and on the brink of famine and fighting to survive. The film is a powerful condemnation of the horrors of war and speaks not only for Southern Italy but for all war-torn countries today, including the devastation in Syria. All ticket proceeds from this event will be donated to Hands Up Foundation for their work in the country.
The film adaptation imagines Lewis returning to the city that charmed and seduced him and is made up of flashbacks between the places of present that Lewis revisits many years later and the stories of the past.
It combines archive footage from the Second World War - some of which has never been seen before - films on liberated Naples and footage of Naples today, with the voice of Norman Lewis superbly portrayed by the award winning actor, Benedict Cumberbatch.

Sponsored by Steppes Travel, in aid of Hands Up Foundation, the event has the patronage of the Italian Embassy in London.
