Carlo Rovelli in conversation with Adam Rutherford

Carlo Rovelli in conversation with Adam Rutherford

Do space and time truly exist? What is reality made of? Can we understand its deep texture?

In a special event, Carlo Rovelli, best-selling author of Seven Brief Lessons on Physics will be in conversation with the BBC’s Adam Rutherford about Rovelli’s new book Reality Is Not What It Seems: The Journey to Quantum Gravity. Together they will explore the story our universe, from the early intuitions of Greek and Roman thinkers to the latest findings from CERN, taking us on a wondrous journey through a whole new world where black holes are waiting to explode, space time is made up of grains and infinity does not exist: a vast universe still largely undiscovered.

Written for anyone ‘eager to set out on this journey for the first time’, Reality is Not What it Seems is Carlo Rovelli’s reply to a friend who might ask of him: “’So, what do you think is the true nature of things?’ as they walk along the shore, on a long midsummer’s evening.”

The man who makes physics sexy. The new Hawking. His writing is luminous.’ – The Times.

Carlo Rovelli is Professor of Physics and head of the school of quantum gravity at Marseille University, having also worked worldwide at MIT, Cambridge and Rome. He comes from Verona. He is the author of Reality Is Not What It Seems: The Journey to Quantum Gravity; Seven Brief Lessons on Physics; The First Scientist: Anaximander and His Legacy; and Quantum Gravity.

Dr Adam Rutherford presents Radio 4's Inside Science. Adam has been a scientist, writer and broadcaster for most of his adult life, across a wide range of media. He has written extensively on science, religion and film and presented programmes for BBC television, including The Cell on the history of biology, The Gene Code, and an episode of the flagship science show Horizon called Playing God on the rise of synthetic biology.
