Victor Burgin in conversation with our Director Marco Delogu

Victor Burgin in conversation with our Director Marco Delogu

Victor Burgin will be in conversation on his work “Voyage to Italy” and on the relationship between text and photography.

In 2006 Victor Burgin was commissioned to make a work in response to a photograph from the archives of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal (CCA). He chose Basilica, a photograph made in 1864 by the Neapolitan photographer Carlo Fratacci. The image shows an anonymous woman standing amongst the ruins of the Basilica in Pompeii. Reflecting on this image, Burgin travelled to Pompeii and made two 360-degree photographic panoramas of the Basilica. From these he produced the suite of three works that comprise “Voyage to Italy”: a single screen video piece, with voice-over, and two photo-text works.

This event is held on the occasion of Victor Burgin’s exhibition “Voyage to Italy” at the Richard Saltoun Gallery in London, the first time this significant work has been exhibited in the UK in its entirety (31 August/29 September).

Victor Burgin (born 1941) is an artist and a writer. He taught at Trent Polytechnic, Polytechnic of Central London, University of California, Santa Cruz, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York, Goldsmiths College, University of London. He had more than 100 solo shows.
