Architecture and Emotions: Alfonso Femia in conversation with Manon Mollard.

Architecture and Emotions: Alfonso Femia in conversation with Manon Mollard.

The third talk of the series 'Project and Destiny: Reflections on design and architecture in Italy today'

The project has to tell a story. Architectural design is an action of “practice of reality” and of vision, i.e. a visionary pragmatism that cannot help but come to terms with the various limitations of reality, even relying on them to pursue and achieve its goals. The act of designing is a moment in which different aspects, themes and constraints overlap in on-going feedback to arrive at the envisioned solution, launching it into reality. But this process requires emotions that guide desires, will, imagination, challenges, to which we make reference to narrate the feelings conveyed by works of architecture. Those works, in turn, also have to speak, to express emotions. They have to belong to us and to communicate through the empathy of light, matter, space, art that establishes a dialogue
with the architecture. The sky of Rome, the angels of Asnieres-sur-Seine, the ceramics of the Docks of Marseille, the wooden trees of Zugliano, the diamond glass of the Horizontal Tower of IULM 6, the draping of sheets of biodynamic cement of the new logistics-production facility of Vimar, all the way to the “traveling” building of Accademia Dallara. The vision is the soul, the project the body that takes form from the vision and makes it real. The voyage continues.
