Contemporary #21. With Luca Zingaretti and Alexi Kaye Campbell

Luca Zingaretti and Alexi Kaye Campbell in conversation

Introduced and moderated by Monica Capuani

Curated and moderated by Monica Capuani, “Contemporary” is a series of encounters – conversations, readings and live performances – presenting to the British audience an authoritative overview of Italian contemporary theatre. Italian actors, playwrights and directors, both acclaimed masters and successful new voices, talk about their artistic research and discuss with important figures of British contemporary theatre.

Luca Zingaretti and Alexi Kaye Campbell will talk about their common experience with The Pride, a contemporary English play focused on homophobia. Written by Alexi Kaye Campbell, former actor who became playwright, the play was then adapted by the actor and director Luca Zingaretti for the Italian theatres where it enjoyed an extraordinary success.

The Pride is a gorgeously-drawn elliptical play that alternates between two very distinct time periods and the lives of three characters whose fate is written by their eras. The play examines changing attitudes toward sexuality over a period of fifty years. The actions that they take in 1958 mirror, affect and illustrate those that take place in 2008. It is an exploration of intimacy, identity, and the courage it takes to be who you really are.

Alexi Kaye Campbell worked many years as an actor before his first play The Pride premiered at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in November 2008 for which he was awarded the Critic’s Circle Prize for Most Promising Playwright and the John Whiting award for Best New Play. The production was also awarded the Olivier award for Outstanding Achievement in an affiliate theatre.

Luca Zingaretti is one of the most in-demand Italian actors. He is mostly well-known for his role playing Inspector Montalbano in the Italian crime series based on the novels by Andrea Camilleri. Throughout his prolific career he has also worked with many important Italian film directors such as Mario Martone, Silvio Soldini, Pupi Avati, Marco Tullio Giordana and the Taviahni brothers. Being interested in the English dramaturgy, he directed and interpreted The Ivory Tower (“La Torre d’avorio”) by Ronald Harwood and The Pride by Alexi Kaye Campbell in 2015.

Monica Capuani is a freelance cultural journalist for important Italian magazines such as L’Espresso, L’Europeo, io Donna, Elle. She is also a literary translator from English and French, having translated more than seventy novels, and of English and American Drama, bringing several plays to the Italian stage, most recently The Pride by Alexi Kaye Campbell, directed and interpreted by Luca Zingaretti.
