Black Lives and Cultures in Italy - ICI Virtual Webinar

Anti-Black racism, xenophobia, and acts of racial violence are an everyday reality in Italy for most migrants, refugees, Roma people, and non-white Italians. This panel aims to shift the focus from the burdens and difficulties of white supremacy in Italy. Instead, it recounts some powerful modes of Black creativity, activism, and self-expression that Black Italians and other Black people living in Italy work to produce that counter and exceed structural and everyday anti-Blackness.

Participants on this panel include:

Djarah Kan, cultural activist and author of Ladri di denti (People, 2020);

Angelica Pesarini, lecturer in social and cultural analysis at NYU Florence, associated expert for the association ‘Razzismo è una brutta storia’ and co-creator of the web series ‘Virtual Salon. Discourses on Black Italia;

Justin Randolph Thompson, new media artist, cultural mediator, educator, and co-founder of Black History Month Florence and Bologna.

The panel will be moderated by Emma Bond (University of St Andrews) and SA Smythe (UCLA)
