International Translation Day

Thursday 30 September is the International Translation Day, thanks to a resolution adopted by the UN in 2017, creating “an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of language professionals, which plays an important role in bringing nations together, facilitating dialogue, understanding and cooperation, contributing to development and strengthening world peace and security. Transposition of a literary or scientific work, including technical work, from one language to another, professional translation, including translation proper, interpretation and terminology, is indispensable to preserving clarity, a positive climate and productiveness in international public discourse and interpersonal communication”.

Here at ICI London we couldn’t agree more!

We work tirelessly to promote our beautiful culture and language, hosting events with authors whose works have been translated into English encouraging and stimulating further translations. One of the results of this work is the series of volumes dedicated to Italian Literature in Translation: a collection of extracts from novels never previously published in English, by Italian writers of the twentieth century. The fourth volume, Neglected Voices, edited by renowned translator Howard Curtis, is out now. It features extracts by authors Alberto Bevilacqua, Carlo Castellaneta, Fausta Cialente, Beppe Fenoglio, Gianna Manzini, Maria Messina, Guido Morselli, Alberto Ongaro, Giuseppe Pontiggia, Giorgio Scerbanenco, Pier Vittorio Tondelli, Renata Viganò.
