21st Week of Italian Language in the World

18 – 24 October
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation presents:
21st Week of Italian Language in the World
Under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic

The Week of the Italian Language in the World is a yearly worldwide celebration of the Italian language and creativity.

This initiative was born in 2001 in cooperation with the Accademia della Crusca. It is organised during the third week of October by the Embassies, Consulates, and Italian Cultural Institutes, with the support of the Ministry of Culture (MiC), the Ministry of University and Research (MIUR), the Government of Switzerland and all of the main partners for the promotion of the Italian language.

The title of the 21st edition, which takes place from 18 to 24 October, is ‘Dante, l’italiano‘. On the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Dante’s passing, the Week of the Italian Language in the World is the conclusion of the ‘Dante 700 nel mondo‘ programme, a worldwide celebration of Dante. At the same time, it is also the prelude to the Stati Generali della Lingua e della Creatività Italiane, which will take place on November 29.

ICI London celebrates Dante during the Week of the Italian Language in the World with two events, on Wednesday 27th October:

at 2,30pm, Geronimo Stilton presents: Il mio amico Dante. The fabumous writer is going to travel all the way to London from New Mouse City, part of a tour which includes the Italian Cultural Institutes of Dublin and Edinburgh as well, to talk to us about Dante and his immortal Divine Comedy, all in his own inimitable style, thanks to two new books about the Divine Comedy addressed to young readers, recently published by Piemme-Mondadori. – to follow, the Italian Consulate General will host a screening of Luca Vullo’s short film Spot Dante. Luca Vullo as a contemporary Dante speaks to a young Beatrice who is increasingly captivated and ends up taking a selfie with the immortal poet!

In the framework of the Week of the Italian Language in the World, on 27 September last, ICI London also hosted an online presentation of Michelangelo Zaccarello’s Leggere senza libri. Conoscere gli e-book di letteratura italiana (Franco Cesati, 2020). The author presented and discussed his latest book, which explores the mass digitalization process and its effect on the quality of the literary products, urging better awareness on the part of the end users, with Prof. Carlo Caruso, Dr. Ambra Moroncini, Dr. Olivia Santovetti, and with the audience. A recording of the presentation is available on our Vimeo channel and on the portal Italiana
