History and Democracy #9: Will education save the world?

With Priyamvada Gopal
Chaired by Andrea Mammone

One of the paradoxes of our times is that despite improved rates of literacy and the ease of access to information via technology, the world is becoming increasingly misinformed about what is happening around us. People are now exposed to fake news and government propaganda. How can we fix this? Education should offer the tools to critically understand this complex globe and distinguish between truth and falsehood - but is it fulfilling its role? In our thought-provoking seminar, Cambridge academic Priyamvada Gopal, in conversation with Royal Holloway's Andrea Mammone, will discuss the current state of public education, the marketisation of academia, the promotion of uncritical thinking and the importance of concepts such as "race", "empire" and "power".
