Critical Conservation in Italy – Lessons from Italy and Britain
A talk by GeM scholar Prof. Benedetta Caglioti
Professor of Architectural History Benedetta Caglioti will give a talk about her work in Italy, including the Ferrara Cathedral, a house in Pompeii and two Roman Temples at Bacoli near Naples.
Benedetta Caglioti is the 2025 GeM Scholar, an award dedicated to the memory of young and talented Italian architects Gloria Trevisan and Marco Gottardi, who tragically perished in the Grenfell Tower fire on 14 June 2017. Out of the grim horror of the disaster, Gloria e Marco Charity (GeM) was founded in their name to provide an annual award to foster an exchange and help talented Italian graduates in studying and gaining experience in architectural conservation in the UK.

Professor of Architectural History, Department of Architecture, University of Ferrara, Benedetta Caglioti completed a PhD with a research on Palazzo Costabili, or of Ludovico il Moro, and Early Renaissance Architecture in Ferrara. Her present professional activities comprise the bell tower of the Ferrara Cathedral, the roof restoration of Villa dei Misteri in Pompei and the restoration project of the Temple of Diana and landscape restoration of the adjacent slope, Bacoli (Naples).
