Cultivating History. A one-of-a-kind winery is Born in Pompeii
Wine, Culture and Heritage
A talk with Gabriel Zuchtriegel, Director General of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii; Antonio Capaldo, Chairman and President Feudi di San Gregorio; Pierpaolo Sirch, Agronomist, Feudi di San Gregorio; Nic Palmarini, Director of UK’s National Innovation Centre for Ageing
A winery with a complete production cycle is being created inside the Pompeii Archaeological Park. A new chapter for the viticulture and history of the site’s natural heritage.
Thanks to a special form of public-private partnership, the Tenute Capaldo Group, and in particular the Feudi di San Gregorio and Basilisco wineries, is cooperating with the Park in the management and enhancement of the vineyards located within this historical site. Thanks to experience gained in recent years while working on existing vineyards, a true “archaeological” vineyard will be created. The vine-planted area will spread over more than 6 hectares, and winemaking and ageing facilities will be built.
As explained by Gabriel Zuchtriegel “Since the 1990s, botanical studies have been conducted by the in-house Applied Research Laboratory of the Archaeological Park to analyse the vineyards of ancient Pompeii, in order to examine their historical and scientific characteristics, wine-growing techniques used in ancient times and the population’s eating habits. Subsequently, the vineyards were enhanced with the aim of recounting the story of the ancient city and making it known from different aspects. Today, the Park is investing in a wider scope of enhancement as well as the conservation of the natural heritage, landscape and environment that are essential features of the archaeological area. The winery is part of a broader archaeo-farming scheme that is also involving other activities such as the optimised cultivation of olive trees, and social farming projects within the framework of the “social and cultural farm”. Indeed, we firmly believe that best way to achieve important results for the whole area is to involve private enterprises with specific expertise as active partners in the project”.
