Elvira Notari: Beyond Silence
England Tour 2026
ICI London supports the England Tour of Elvira Notari: Beyond Silence this May, with screenings across Exeter, Bristol, Brighton, Cambridge and London. Premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in the Venice Classics section, the documentary is produced by Parallelo 41 Produzioni, Awen Films and Luce Cinecittà.
Directed by Valerio Ciriaci, the film retraces the life, work and legacy of Elvira Notari, the pioneering Neapolitan filmmaker widely recognized as Italy’s first woman film director, and will be accompanied by a series of in-person conversations with director Valerio Ciriaci, producer Antonella Di Nocera, and special guests.
Blending archival research, surviving fragments of Notari’s cinema, and reflections from contemporary artists and scholars, the film traces the story of a figure of extraordinary importance in early film history, while asking what it means to restore a woman filmmaker to cultural memory today.
