The Italian Cultural Institute in London, the Italian Trade Agency and INTERNI Magazine invite you to the talk “Ephemeral Architectures”, taking place as part of the London Design Festival.
Following welcome remarks by Francesco Bongarrà, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in London, Giovanni Sacchi, Director of the Italian Trade Agency in London, and Gilda Bojardi, Editor-in-Chief of INTERNI, the following speakers will take part:

The culture of impermanence has its roots in the Baroque tradition of creating temporary installations. Papal Rome was renowned as early as the Renaissance for its masterfully designed theatrical settings, created by architects working for the Popes to welcome visiting kings and ambassadors to the Eternal City (Michel de Montaigne’s Journal de Voyage, 1581). Genoa, Venice, Florence and other major European capitals were no less celebrated, including London, renowned for the agile and striking theatrical backdrops of the Elizabethan era.
The concept of ephemeral architecture has gained increasing importance in contemporary practice, both as a design approach and as a philosophy. It is a discipline capable of bringing together the craftsmanship and industrial techniques of Made in Italy. For architects, creating installations for an international event, such as those presented by INTERNI during FuoriSalone, represents an important challenge and an opportunity to experiment with innovative projects, producing temporary works designed to make a powerful impact on the public.
Impermanence is also central to temporary exhibitions, where the scenographic design often becomes the primary means of communication for the exhibition as a whole. Ephemeral design likewise plays a key role in showroom installations, where architects and art directors create sophisticated scenographic environments to strengthen the identity of the brands they represent.
The event will also provide an opportunity to present Milano Design Hub & Spoke (Electa, 2026), the monograph published by INTERNI dedicated to Milan, the global epicentre of Made in Italy design, whose influence has spread worldwide through prestigious flagship stores and international contract projects.
