European Writers Festival. The Stories We Tell: Viola Di Grado

ICI supports the first European Writers’ Festival at the British Library, taking place on 20-21 May 2023, which will gather many of Europe’s greatest storytellers for one remarkable and unmissable weekend, to perform and debate the literature and big ideas defining their countries and Europe today.

Italian author Viola di Grado will be joining the panel discussion Stories from the New Europe on 20 May, 12:00- 13:15 at the British Library. The writers will talk about the trends and genres of European literature, if there is such a thing like European literature, and about the role of writers in defining the ideas of Europe today.

Organised by EUNIC London in partnership with the European Literature Network and the British Library, and with the support of the EU Delegation to the United Kingdom and the European Parliament Liaison Office in the UK.

Viola Di Grado became the youngest winner of the 2011 Campiello First Novel Award with her first novel, 70% Acrylic 30% Wool, and the youngest finalist for Italy’s most prestigious literary prize, The Strega. Her second novel, Hollow Heart, was a finalist for the PEN Literary Award, the Italian Prose in Translation Award and the International Dublin Literary Award 2017. Her third novel Bambini di Ferro was published in 2015 to much critical and academic acclaim, followed by Fuoco al cielo in 2019 which was a Strega candidate and awarded the Premio Viareggio jury’s selection. She has an undergraduate degree in Eastern Languages from the University of Turin and a Masters in East Asian Studies from the University of London. She has lived in Leeds, Kyoto, Rome and is now in London.
