Book O’Clock with Gloria Danili. Pimpa. Un viaggio nella scienza

1. Book O Clock – Pimpa

Saturday 14 March, 3pm at the Victoria Library,  160 Buckingham Palace Rd, London SW1W 9TR

Book O’Clock with Gloria Danili: Pimpa, un viaggio nella scienza by Altan

In Italian

From last month, “Book O’Clock” — the book club for children aged 4 to 11 and their families, promoted by the Italian Cultural Institute in London in collaboration with children’s and YA author Gloria Danili and SIAL school — has moved from its historic home in Holland Park to the Children’s Room of the wonderful Victoria Library (just a few minutes from Victoria train station), and it now takes place on Saturday afternoons (instead of Sundays).

To mark this transition, Book O’Clock now proudly features a brand-new logo created by Mirco Maselli (aka M V Maselli, former artist for Lupo Alberto, and author of books, comics and graphic novels).

The next appointment on Saturday, March 14 will be very, very special!

Pimpa is about to make her return to the English capital, and Armandone will bring with him a whole ship loaded with his brand-new illustrated book “PIMPA. UN VIAGGIO NELLA SCIENZA” (published by Franco Cosimo Panini and created by Altan). He’ll make a pit-stop at Victoria Library to give a complimentary copy of the book to all the Book O’Clockers present! Our Book O’Clockers will read the book featuring the famous icon born from the imagination of cartoonist Francesco Altan, and immerse themselves in the world of the beloved little dog with red spots. Alongside her, they will travel the length of the Italian peninsula to meet renowned Italian scientists — both past and present: from Galileo and Leonardo to Guglielmo Marconi, Margherita Hack, and Rita Levi Montalcini. Our Book O’Clockers — led by Gloria — armed with scissors and cut-outs, will then create posters featuring images of Pimpa, their favourite scientists (male and female), and the Italian landscapes dearest to their hearts.

Set your watches! Story time is about to peek out from among the shelves of the beautiful children’s and young adults’ library at 160 Buckingham Palace Road!

“PIMPA. UN VIAGGIO NELLA SCIENZA” is an initiative promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and distributed worldwide through the network of Italian Embassies, Consulates, and Italian Cultural Institutes. The project, in collaboration with publisher Franco Cosimo Panini, aims to promote knowledge of Italy and its territories among even the youngest readers.

Please ONLY book for the children attending. Please note, children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian, whose presence is requested throughout the event.

While we wait for her to arrive, I want to introduce you to a friend. Her name is Margherita Hack, but everyone calls her ‘The Lady of the Stars’.”

Pimpa and Margherita fly into space. Margherita knows the names of the stars and planets. She greets them as the rocket Egidio passes close by.

“Do you have a telescope too?” Pimpa asks her. “Yes, and I was the first woman to direct an astronomical observatory.” “In Milan?” “No, in the city of Trieste, in Friuli Venezia Giulia.” “I know where that is!” says rocket Egidio. “Then take us there,” exclaims Pimpa.
