Sergio Caputo has developed a truly unmistakable musical and literary style that is uniquely his own, blending Italian song with jazz and lyrics inspired by modern poetry. In 1983, his first album “Un Sabato Italiano” was released. This album immediately brought him success and remains a classic to this day. His music is a pop-jazz style that often ventures into Latin sounds, featuring an innovative use of language. The predominant themes are everyday life, love, and metropolitan neuroses. Following “Un Sabato Italiano”, he released 18 more albums plus various compilations. Sergio participated in the Sanremo Festival three times, and in recent years he has returned with particular determination to jazz and Latin sonorities. Among his excellent collaborations are names such as Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Scott, Mel Collins (King Crimson), Tony Bowers (Simply Red), Enrico Rava, Roberto Gatto, Flavio Boltro, Danilo Rea, and many others. With the new millennium, he moved to California, where he lived and worked for 12 years, reconnecting with his musical roots and establishing himself as a smooth jazz guitarist (album “That Kind of Thing”). In 2008, his first novel was published by Mondadori, titled “Disperatamente (e in ritardo cane)”.
Sergio celebrated the 30th anniversary of “Un Sabato Italiano” with “Un Sabato Italiano 30”, a remake of the historic album in a more jazz-oriented version, including two previously unreleased tracks. The book “Un Sabato Italiano memories”, an essential Mondadori Oscar edition, was also released. In March 2015, a new album of unreleased tracks titled “POP, JAZZ and LOVE” came out, entirely in English except for the single “A bazzicare il lungomare”. His signature mix of pop, jazz, and poetry reaffirms the style that has always distinguished the artist. In 2017, an artistic collaboration began with Francesco Baccini, resulting in the album of unreleased tracks “CHEWING GUM BLUES”. In 2018, among many live performances, he released the album “OGGETTI SMARRITI”, an unplugged recording featuring three unreleased songs and other “cult” tracks from his career. In November 2019, he released the single “Amo il mio nuovo look”. In December 2019, his “best of” collection made for France was released on all digital platforms—a selection of his timeless hits re-recorded in French, titled “SERGIO CAPUTO EN FRANCE”. In 2020, just before summer, Sergio surprised fans with the Caribbean-flavored single “MA CHE LURIDA ESTATE”, which quickly gained great acclaim, along with its namesake video. In February 2021, a new EP was released with his Trio—consisting of Sergio himself, Fabiola Torresi on bass, and Alessandro Marzi on drums. The album (and its related video) was produced entirely remotely due to the lockdown, with the bassist and drummer in Rome and Sergio Caputo in France. In 2022, he was heavily involved in intense live activity in Italy and France, culminating in a rich summer concert season.
But 2023 marked the 40th anniversary of UN SABATO ITALIANO, his debut album that has transcended generations, remaining current and loved by both longtime and new fans. Sergio Caputo prepared to celebrate it with a historic tour across Italy’s most prestigious theaters, returning to a big band formation (with the trio as the driving force). The 40th anniversary event was also marked by an essential celebratory album curated by Sony, featuring big band remakes of the original album plus some unreleased tracks. While the “Un Sabato Italiano Show” tour continued, Sergio was awarded the prestigious Premio Lunezia. In January 2024, the single “Sono Uno Spirito Libero” was released on all platforms under Columbia (Sony). Also through Columbia, in the summer of 2024 came the single “Caffè” accompanied by a video, followed by Sony releases of “Mai Dire Mai”, “Inquietudine”, and “Plastic Mambo”.
The 2025-2026 season will be packed with concerts: in addition to returning to Milan, Rome, Florence, and other cities with a new show titled “NE APPROFITTO PER FARE UN PO’ DI MUSICA” in big band format—without interrupting his trio activity—there are many dates in prestigious theaters across Italy.
There is also important news: a documentary about Sergio Caputo has been filmed and will be released soon by RAI (titled “È sempre un sabato italiano”, it explores his career and the legacy of his iconic debut album, featuring appearances by Valerio Lundini, Ubaldo Pantani, and Carlo Massarini).
