An event dedicated to literature that has given voice to madness—not to confine it, but to understand it and liberate it.
Through poetry and narrative, we will explore how writers and authors have challenged the reality of the asylums, contributing to cultural and social change. A journey through words that have broken through barriers, restoring dignity to those on the margins. From Sebastiano Vassalli and his Dino Campana, to the surrealism of poets, to Viola Ardone, to Mario Tobino, the psychiatrist who wrote about the Free Women of Magliano.

Beatrice Sica is Associate Professor in Italian Studies at University College London. She was educated in Italy, the US, and France. She has been visiting professor at the universities of Geneva, Napoli-Suor Orsola Benincasa and Bologna, and has published essays on Italian Futurism and French Surrealism; magical realism; Italian literature and art during and after Fascism; and Italian poetry.
Carmine M. Pariante is Professor of Psychiatry at King’s College London, where he has worked for the last 25 years. Born in Naples, he studied in Rome and in Cagliari, before training in the US and then settling in London. He is passionate about arts, creativity and mental health, writes regularly in newspapers and magazines, and edits the digital magazine Inspire the Mid, dedicated to the intersection between science, society and culture.
