TOSCA – a film by Jean Renoir, Luchino Visconti and Carlo Koch (1940)

A special FAI UK event: the film buffs among our audience will be pleased to know that, contrary to what Luchino Visconti thought, TOSCA, the film based on Sardou’s play, still exists and it will be screened here – with a snag, in Spanish (with Italian subtitles).

But we are lucky to be able to show it at all. There is a lot of Puccini’s music, of the city of Rome seen through the eyes of Jean Renoir and Luchino Visconti, (via Appia Antica with shepherds not film stars!), and it is strongly political: Michel Simon is Scarpia with Mussolinian undertones.

Introduced by Gaia Servadio, author of Luchino Visconti – a Biography (translated in several languages and published both in the UK and the US).
