Etta De Benedetti Carnelli was a tenured teacher of English literature at secondary schools in Milan. She subsequently taught comparative literature in Italy before moving to Tokyo and Toronto. After returning to Europe, she settled in London, where she taught at the University of East London. With a background in the humanities, philosophy and social sciences, she went on to work in editing, specialising in fiction and non-fiction. One of the founding members of Il Circolo, Etta led the association’s Book Club for many years and organised numerous literary evenings, opening her home as a meeting place for writers, journalists and leading figures in Italian culture. Today, alongside the organising team, she coordinates MatchPoint, Il Circolo’s literary competition, which is now in its fifth edition.
