Open Dialogo Artist Residency

The cultural exchange programme, Open Dialogo is an open competition designed to select four D/deaf and disabled dance practitioners from Italy and England engaging them in bilateral Artist Residencies.

The project is managed by Stopgap Dance Company, and it began with a set of free webinar series in May 2023. The next phase of the project is for Dance organisations in England and Italy to host bilateral artist residencies for disabled dance practitioners. These residencies will take place in September and October this year.

In England, DanceEast in Ipswich will host Monica Barone from Parma, produced by LENZ Foundation, and the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds will host Aristide Rontini from Bologna, produced by Nexus. Aristide will be further developing his project “Back Eye Black” (Dates are 10 – 14 September), which is also set to premiere at Crisalide Festival in Forlì in November.
Monica will conduct a choreographic research of her new work “Human Inhuman Posthuman – Sensitive Geosophies” to ‘unhinge’ the social habit of looking at disability through the medical model (Dates are 9 – 13 October).

In Italy, Oriente Occidente in Rovereto will host Nadenh Poan from Aldershot and Surface Area Dance Theatre from Newcastle to conduct Research and Development of their respective dance work. Surface Area Dance Theatre will run a creative residency that explores how dance can be made more through the usage of subpackets and other audio-visual and touch-sensitive technology (Dates are 2 – 6 October).
Nadenh will further develop his new duet “Reflections”, which was first performed as a part of Resolution at The Place in May 2022 (Dates are 15 – 19 October).
