Elements of the Circular Economy

Elements of the Circular Economy

The Scientific Office of the Embassy of Italy in the United Kingdom and the Italian Cultural Institute in London in collaboration with AISUK, presents the first Science for Society event Elements of the Circular Economy on the occasion of the UNESCO International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements.

The European Chemical Society (EuChemS) has produced a new periodic table as a contribution to the UNESCO proclaimed International Year of the Periodic Table. It highlights the amount of each element in the earth’s crust and atmosphere and the vulnerability to dispersion over the next few years. We shall discuss what we must do to nurture the 90 elements that are the only building block of our beautiful and diverse world.

Nicola Armaroli is Research Director at the Italian National Research Council (CNR). His scientific activity is focused on photochemistry and photophysics of new materials for lighting technologies and solar energy conversion. He has published over 220 scientific papers and 7 books and is a consultant for international institutions in the area of energy, technologies and natural resources. He has received several prizes, including the Gold Medal Enzo Tiezzi of the Italian Chemical Society and is an elected member of the Executive Board of the European Chemical Society.

David Cole-Hamilton is Emeritus Professor of Chemistry in the University of St Andrews where he worked for 30 years researching the applications of organometallic chemistry in catalysis and materials science before retiring in 2014. He won several prizes including the Alwin Mittasch Prize of the German Catalysis Society (2017) and five prizes for teaching. He is currently Vice-President of the European Chemical Society (EuChemS), having previously been President. He chaired the task group that developed the new EuChemS Periodic Table.
