Liberate Rame and the Voice of the Sirens

Liberate Rame and the Voice of the Sirens

An evening with Adriana Cavarero and Filomena Campus

Introduced by Katia Pizzi

Italian philosopher Adriana Cavarero presents her talk The Voice of the Sirens, about the pleasure of singing and the uniqueness of the voice.

Followed by Liberate Rame, a jazz theatre performance by Filomena Campus (vocals) and Steve Lodder (piano), dedicated to the late theatre artist Franca Rame.

Introduced by Mattea Fo, President of the Fondazione Fo Rame.

Filomena Campus shines a light on the life of Italian actress and theatre maker Franca Rame (1929-2013), who was also a playwright, director, producer, archivist, and political activist. Today, Rame is mostly remembered for the theatre work she created with her husband and collaborator, the Nobel Prize winning playwright and performer Dario Fo.

Campus’ performance is a tribute to a fellow woman artist and friend, who deserves to be acknowledged and celebrated in her own right. It features a letter to Fo that Rame published a few months before her death, intertwined with short extracts from Rame’s comic monologues, arrangements of popular tunes written by Fo and Rame, and new jazz compositions about Rame written by Campus and pianist Steve Lodder.

Campus explores the relationship between vocal improvisation and theatre improvisation, which was one of Rame’s many talents, being born into a family of traveling actors and comedians with roots in the Commedia dell’Arte.

This project is part of Campus’ current research on Franca Rame at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, supported by LAHP (London Arts and Humanities Partnership).

The Fondazione “Dario Fo e Franca Rame” was created in 2019 in order to keep alive the memory of Dario Fo and Franca Rame’s life and work and to disseminate among present and future generations the important cultural legacy of these two extraordinary figures, whose artistic talent and work is inextricably linked to their personal life, political and social engagement, a unique example of Life and Art.

Dario Fo and Franca Rame’s cultural history embraces the arts as a whole: from theatre to literature to painting, intertwined with the profound political and social activism, aimed in particular at the protection of society’s outcasts and forgotten individuals, as well as at the safeguard and enhancement of the environment and of the cultural heritage.

The Fondazione strives to keep alive and disseminate their life example and work by creating a centre to keep and promote the initiatives, ideas and projects which are consistent with Dario Fo and Franca Rame’s thought, life and values. Therefore the Fondazione only serves purposes that are consistent with social, cultural and environmental solidarity.

Mattea Fo has studied arts and humanities. She started working within her family’s theatre company at a very young age, revising texts and publications, curating and updating the blogs and webpages, and conceiving online advertising campaigns. In 2011 she started working in close contact with her grandparents Franca and Dario, focusing on the immense patrimony preserved in the family archives. Since 2016 she has been curating the exhibitions organised by the Compagnia Teatrale Fo Rame.

She is the President of the Fondazione “Dario Fo e Franca Rame”, which she co-founded in 2019.
