To mark the beginning of a new partnership between LICAF and the Italian Cultural Institute, the LICAF organised a double book presentation by two of Italy’s most respected creators, Alessandro Tota and Paolo Bacilieri.
Memoirs of a Book Thief (Alessandro Tota with artist Pierre van Hove, also a guest of the Festival) is a “psychologically astute comic, which perfectly captures the posturing, desperation, and nonsense of the highbrow poetry scene of Paris in the 1950s”.
Fun, by Paolo Bacilieri, is both an impeccably researched history and a playful literary crime story – a breathtakingly inventive graphic novel that explores the strange power of one of the world’s most popular pastimes, crossword puzzles.

SelfMadeHero are graphic novels publishers, world renowned for the range and quality of their European titles, from the quirky and humorous to the political and profound.

The Lakes International Comic Art Festival is the only one of its kind in the UK, taking place in the English Lake District, in the market town of Kendal. Modelled on European-style festivals, such as Angoulême in France, it takes over the whole town for a weekend of comic art. Its aim is to celebrate the whole spectrum of comic art, inspiring existing comic art fans and creators and, it hopes, generating new audiences and creators too. It invests in creators through a commissioning programme and has an emphasis on developing international collaborations.

Alessandro Tota is one of the founders of the magazine Canicola, which won the BD Alternative Prize at the Angoulême Festival in 2007. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna, he is the author of numerous children’s books (including the Angoulême-nominated Caterina) and graphic novels. Since 2011, he has been a lecturer in comics at the Auguste Renoi Technical College in Paris.

Paolo Bacilieri‘s works include Barokko, Durasagra and The Supermaso Attitude. He is also the creator of Zeno Porno, whose madcap adventures are collected in the books Zeno Porno and La Magnifica Desolazione. His recent graphic novels include Adiòs Muchachos, Sweet Salgari, Palla and Tramezzino
