Animated films as a force for environmental good

On the occasion of the XXIII Week of the Italian Language in the World, under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic.

On the International Day for Climate Action, we are pleased to host an event with screenings and a panel discussion, co-organised with the Embassy of Switzerland in the UK , within the Italian Language Week, this year dedicated to sustainability.

London-based, Swiss filmmaker Simone Giampaolo, award-winning director of animated films, will introduce the screening of the Bafta-nominated short Only a Child, a visual poem created by over 20 animation directors under Giampaolo’s artistic supervision. The short film (20’) gives shape and colour to the original words spoken by Severn Cullis-Suzuki at the UN Summit in Rio in 1992, a child’s desperate call to action for the future of our planet. An omnibus film celebrating the environmental youth movement 30 years in the making.

Followed by the screening of 4 more environmental animated shorts, selected by Simone Giampaolo:

The Beauty by Pascal Schelbli. What if plastic could be integrated into sea life? The Beauty is a poetic journey through the oceans, which are simultaneously stunning and filthy. Discover a world where concerns and fears dissolve into the mysterious depth of the polluted blue sea.

Migrants by Hugo Caby, Antoine Dupriez, Aubin Kubiak, Lucas Lermytte, Zoé Devise. Two polar bears are driven into exile due to global warming. They will encounter brown bears along their journey, with whom they will try to cohabitate.

Big Bang by Bruno Bozzetto. Planet Earth has become a gigantic landfill, as a gardener and her husband learn too late

Gaia by a group of Bournemouth University students. An Australian Koala is caught up in a dangerous fire. Gaia means ‘Mother Earth’ and the film is a social tribute to the animals killed in the Australian bush fires.

One episode of Obki: The Eco Alien series, created by Amanda Evans. Join Eco-Alien OBKI and his best friend Orb as they learn how to save the planet one step at a time

Simone Giampaolo is a London-based Director with an insatiable appetite for meaningful storytelling and humorous characters. He graduated in 2013 in Computer Animation Art & Design at the National Centre for Computer Animation in Bournemouth. Throughout his career he’s written and directed over ten multi-award winning original short films, including the Oscar®-shortlisted Only a Child. He’s been working on a multitude of commissioned projects (TV series, commercials, short films and specials) for clients such as Sky, Netflix, Google, Cartoon Network, Disney, LEGO, Nickelodeon, Marvel, Pokémon and BBC, while collaborating with world-class studios like Jellyfish Pictures, Axis Studios, Blue Zoo, Ritzy Animation and Aardman. He’s also a board member of London ACM Siggraph and View Conference.

Bruno Bozzetto is an Italian cartoon animator and film director, creator of many short pieces, mainly of apolitical or satirical nature. He created his first animated short “Tapum! the weapons’ story” in 1958 at the age of 20. His most famous character, a hapless little man named ” Signor Rossi” (Mr. Rossi), has been featured in many animated shorts as well as starring in three feature films Mr Rossi Looks for Happiness (1976), Mr Rossi’s Dreams(1977) and Mr Rossi’s Vacation (1977)

Amanda Evans has over 20 years of experience in developing and launching successful projects including her first animation – Elizabeth Avenue – which follows the adventures of four K9 friends across the streets of London.
Obki the alien is a true passion project which has brought to life Amanda’s creative ambition to take children on an animated adventure under the sea while educating them about the very real challenges faced by our planet. Her visionary ideas and business knowledge have brought together a talented team to launch Obki onto our screens.

Chrissy Levett. Creative Director, studied graphic design and communications at the Royal College of Art in London. She’s won a number of industry awards for branding, is a TEDx speaker, educator, author – believing creative thinking is vital for us to solve global challenges. Now Founder & CEO for Creative Conscience a global movement set up to encourages, rewards and supports creative thinkers to use their talents for social & environmental impact.

Bella Lack is an young English environmental campaigner. She wants to persuade society to “break free from this culture of dominance over the environment and other animals.” Bella Lack is an advocate for animal rights, wildlife protection, and environmental issues. an ambassador for the NGO “Save the Asian Elephants”, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), the Born Free Foundation and the Jane Goodall Foundation, and she has collaborated with the government to combat ivory poaching. She also works with the RSPCA. She has been campaigning for what she believes in from the age of sixteen.
