ICI London supports the Bristol Translates Literary Translation Summer School, which will take place from 1 to 5 July 2024. Applications are now open.
The tutor leading the Italian workshop in to English is Howard Curtis. Howard has translated more than a hundred books, mostly fiction, from Italian, French and Spanish. Among the Italian writers he has translated are Luigi Pirandello, Beppe Fenoglio, Leonardo Sciascia, Giorgio Scerbanenco, Gianrico Carofiglio, Pietro Grossi, Filippo Bologna, Fabio Geda, Andrej Longo, Paolo Sorrentino, Matteo Righetto and Marco Malvaldi.
The tutor leading the Italian workshop out of English is Leonardo Marcello Pignataro. Leonardo is a literary and audiovisual translator from English and Russian into Italian. In the past 30 years he has translated over 60 works for major Italian publishers. Among the writers he’s translated are F. Scott Fitzgerald, V.S. Naipaul, Samuel Beckett, Norman Lewis, Leo Tolstoy, Pavel Florensky, Eugene Vodolazkin and Anton Chekhov. In 2022 he was awarded the FIT Aurora Borealis Prize for Outstanding Translation of Non-Fiction Literature, for his translation of the four CUP volumes of Samuel Beckett’s Letters.
The other two days are filled with panel discussions and workshops on industry trends, job readiness and the opportunities available around different literary genres, including a keynote by Maboula Soumahoro, ‘Translation is My Country’, and sessions on:
- how to pitch to publishers,
- how to negotiate contracts,
- making a living as a literary translator,
- translating graphic novels,
- queer translation,
- translation and neurodiversity.
