DIARIES. Perspectives on Photography. Francesco Zizola and Stuart Franklin in Conversation

1. DIARIES (3)

A special event dedicated to contemporary photography is coming to the Italian Cultural Institute in London.

On the occasion of the publication of Diaries by Francesco Zizola (Yogurt Editions, 2025), curated by Francesco Rombaldi, renowned Italian photographer Francesco Zizola will be joined by acclaimed British photographer Stuart Franklin for an exclusive talk on Monday 22 September 2025 at 6.30 pm at ICI London.

For over three decades, Zizola has borne witness to conflicts, revolutions and natural disasters, each image carrying not only fragments of global history but also of himself. Diaries reopens his monumental archive, revisiting a visual language of “conflict” that transcends war alone to encompass disaster, transformation and consequence.

Franklin, best known for photographing the Tiananmen Square uprising in 1989 – including the iconic “Tank Man” image published in Time Magazine – went on to receive the World Press Photo Award. Like Zizola, his work has evolved beyond photojournalism. In his photobook Traces (Dewi Lewis Publishing, 2023), he explores photography as a medium that weaves together memory, landscape and society.

This conversation will examine the relationship between photographers and their subjects. It will highlight photography as a uniquely interdisciplinary practice, bridging art, words, memory and documentary.
