All men are philosophers.
ANTONIO GRAMSCI
Innovative and wide-ranging thinker Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) constantly affirmed the need to overcome the historically determined rupture between intellectual and manual functions, criticizing the existence of a separate elite of specialists in politics and knowledge. To Gramsci, humanity needs “human emancipation,” subverting the traditional relations between rulers and ruled to end the exploitation of man-by-man. Giovanni Fresu will discuss Gramsci’s propensity to subversion through the biography Antonio Gramsci.
In conversation with Fresu, historian Jean-Yves Frétigné will guide the audience through Gramsci’s life and works, emphasizing Gramsci’s unwavering commitment to political practice and resistance. In his book To Live is to Resist, Frétigné depicts how Gramsci never surrendered, even in conditions that stripped him of all power – except the power of thinking.
GLOBAL GRAMSCI is a series of events curated by Marzia Maccaferri, with the collaboration of Geoff Andrews, Alessandro Carlucci, and Peter D. Thomas and supported by ICI London and ASMI – Association for the Study of Modern Italy.
