Italo Calvino is 100!

On the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great Italian writer (1923 – 1985) ICI London marks the occasion with a series of events, taking place here in Belgrave Square, at the University of Leeds and at the University of Cambridge.

  • Tuesday 5 December, 5.15pm, at St John’s College, University of Cambridge: Lungo lo stesso sentiero. Italo Calvino and Primo Levi. A talk by Domenico Scarpa(Centro Studi Primo Levi, Torino; author of Calvino fa la conchiglia, 2023)
  • Wednesday 6 December, from 2.30pm, at ICI London: Italo Calvino and Anglophone Culture. Distinguished speakers talk about Calvino and his cultural legacy in Britain. Organised by Pierpaolo Antonello (University of Cambridge), Guido Bonsaver (University of Oxford), Martin McLaughlin (University of Oxford)
  • Opening date TBC, at ICI London: Italian Excellence. Illustrations for Italo Calvino. Exhibition of illustrations by Italian artists that worked on Calvino’s works. A project by  Bologna Children’s Book Fair, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), and Emilia-Romagna Region, curated by  Accademia Drosselmeier/Cooperativa Giannino Stoppani
  • Thursday 7 December, 3.30pm, at the University of Leeds: Italo Calvino. In a nut/SHELL.  Domenico Scarpa (author of Calvino fa la conchiglia, 2023) in conversation with Olivia Santovetti (Italian) and Richiard Hibbit (French/Comparative Literature)
  • Monday 11 December, 6pm, at ICI London: Performance C’erano una volta le fiabe. Italo Calvino e le radici dell’immaginario italiano. Written and directed by Leonardo Petrillo. With Maurizio Caste’, Manuel Fiorentini, Sharon Amato, Vito Capito, Annachiara Fanelli and Anastasia Marino
