Sunday 2 April, 3.30pm
Monelle by Diego Marcon
Midland Arts Centre, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham B12 9QH
ICI London supports the screening of the short film by Italian filmmaker Diego Marcon, followed by a Q&A with Marcon and author Christopher Beanland, discussing Marcon’s artistic practice, his interest in Italian fascist architecture, cinema and the horror genre.
After a short interval, the afternoon will finish with a screening of Joyce Chopra’s cult 1985 film Smooth Talk, starring Laura Dern as a 15-year-old teen who is approached by a mysterious and dangerous stranger.
A special event by Ikon Gallery in Birmingham and MAC (Midlands Art Centre) to tie in with Ikon’s current exhibition Horror In The Modernist Block, which sees artists unpack the troubled histories and legacies of modernist buildings through the lens of horror by linking its tropes (suspense, darkness, fear) with qualities of modernist design.
This event will take place at the MAC – Midlands Arts Centre, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham B12 9QH
Free – booking essential. More info and booking HERE
Diego Marcon’s films, videos and installations consider the relationship between reality and representation. They make connections between theoretical discourse on the ontology of the moving image and popular forms of genre cinema and television, such as horror. His film Monelle (2017) has been screened in public galleries and film programmes, including Can a door be fascist? (Institute of Contemporary Art, London, UK, 2021). His recent film, The Parents’ Room (2021) was screened during Directors’ Fortnight at the 74th Cannes Film Festival (2021) and presented in the 59th Venice Biennale, The Milk of Dreams (2022).
Christopher Beanland is the author of two novels The Wall in The Head (2019) and Spinning Out of Control (2014) and several non-fiction books including Concrete Concept – Brutalist Buildings Around the World (2016).
